{Grace Erin} Happy Birthday Baby Girl

Baby Grace finally made her appearance on Friday, January 20th...only two weeks late of her due date. I can already tell this little girl is going to take after her stubborn daddy. The last two weeks have probably felt like months to expecting momma, but they made for an entertaining couple of weeks reading all of Cora's Facebook updates anxiously awaiting Grace's arrival...

- Full of Grace for 288 days.
- Luella just told me "I wanna hold baby grace"... Me too Lu, me too...
- Time to go get "the" salad, I guess....#projectgetoutgracebeforefriday
- I am not getting my way. I don't do that well. Come on Grace. You got notice. It's time to leave on your own before the cops come tomorrow morning.

Cora was scheduled to arrive at Memorial Hospital on Friday morning for induction at 6am. She was now two weeks late and that is the longest the doctors would allow her to go. I got the text at 5:58am that they were on their way and another at 6:19am asking if I was awake. Ha, I was already on my way at that point. I've been waiting for this day like it was my own birthday...there was no way I was going to miss it. With my camera in tow, I arrived to the hospital and they were already all settled into the SAME room that Luella was born in. I thought that was super comforting to me...I hoped it was to Cora too. She was super anxious about being induced.

We knew it was starting when Cora directed all three of us to stop talking. So Aaron, Becky, & I just silently sat all checking our phones, texting one another, and updating our Facebook status. Cora rolled over on her right side, left arm gripping the bed rail, and her body shaking as she labored through the contractions. Occasionally she would grab her head with her right arm and pull her hair. The contractions were coming and she was not getting a break. You could tell by watching her that it was intense. The nurse checked her one last time and Cora was already dilated to 9cm and then the rush began to prepare the room for delivery. The doctor came running into the room still putting her hair back and her scrubs on. She missed Luella's delivery...thanks to shift change and she promised to not miss this one. She was amazing!

When labor finally started, I think Grace must have been as excited to exit as her mom because she shot out and the poor thing was so bruised. The nurses and doctor called it "rapid descent" and the bruising on her face was from the trauma of literally being pushed out of the birthing canal so quickly. No joke...it was fast! They started administering Pitocin at 8am, water broke at 9am, and baby Grace was born at 9:59am. It all happened that quickly!

I'm so happy to been there again for the Volkoffs second little girl and to have it captured it on film. It truly is the one of the most amazing experiences of my lifetime...to watch new life enter this world. It has such a profound impact and I'm still in awe of Cora's strength...laboring and delivering without any drugs. At one time Cora yelled "Get out!"...of course referring to baby Grace in her womb. The most painful moment was when the doc had to rotate Grace because her shoulders were too broad. Cora let out such a loud and primal scream....it kinda scared me for a moment. I don't think I started breathing again until Grace took her first breath and let out a cry. Whew...

If you are a photographer and think you'd like to capture a baby being a born...do it! Talk to your friends, offer your services, and prepare yourself for the event of a lifetime. You won't regret it...but you might cry for a week after. It's that beautiful.

P.S. I'm not one for blood or anything squeamish (I can hardly stand to get a shot or give blood myself). I was not affected in the least bit by any of it and I saw it ALL. The emotions and beauty of the experience really do overcome any fears you may have. At least they did for me.

I cannot believe how many people I know right now expecting (something is in the water, people)! And even better, I'm getting the privilege of capturing this chapter for them...for my friends and for so many new clients. It's pretty rad! {Cora} Expecting | Long Beach, CA Maternity Photographer

My friend Cora & I have been talking about doing her family photos and capturing her pregnancy for MONTHS! We had lots of fun ideas but life just kinda seemed to get in the way...and it never happened. Well, only a day before her due date she was on her way to get hair done. I immediately thought this is perfect! You'll have just got your hair done and will be feeling great after a little pampering...let's do your photos today. She was game and we literally only shot for 20 minutes.

This has not been an easy pregnancy for Cora and she's felt pretty crummy for most of it (which is pretty much the opposite of her first pregnancy). You honestly would never have known it by the way she looks in these images. It was a beautiful January day, well into the 70s. She had that pregnancy glow! And would you believe the dress she is wearing is NOT maternity? In fact she bought this dress when we were in Florence, Italy way before she was married or had kids.

I'm excited to be able to be in the room for Cora's labor & delivery again...to capture it with my camera. I'm waiting standby, as she is now two days overdue. And of course, I'm back to teaching tomorrow after having had the last two weeks off for Winter Vacation. When she had Lu, it was honestly one of the most amazing experiences to have been able to witness such a miracle. I can hardly wait for baby Grace's arrival! Just a quick note to wish you all a very Merry Christmas! I'm not going to lie...this has been a very difficult year. Which makes it even more difficult to get in the Christmas spirit. But I'm constantly reminded the blessing a child brings. I am so grateful for this little bundle of energy. She keeps me on my toes. She challenges me daily. And she inspires me to be a better person. And she shows me how to love. Unconditionally. I'm so lucky to be her mom.

I've been on such a short deadline for holidays photos, that I've been delivering entire galleries before I even get to blog them. That's not usually how I do it. I always try to give a sneak peek within a few days or at most a week, and then the full gallery shortly after. But I haven't been blogging and I love to blog. This little dude is one of the happiest smiliest little guys I've ever met. I get to see him frequently because he attends the same daycare as Brookie. Unfortunately he's been sick and wasn't exactly himself for our session together. I'm thinking we need to shoot again soon when he's feeling better because his smile is magical. I just love seeing him when I drop off & pick up Brookie.

Remember this expecting momma? Well, I got to do a short shoot with her & her boyfriend...now that he is in town for the delivery of their little boy Jace (or Jase?). She is DUE now and is patiently (or not so patiently) waiting for his arrival.

I always try to encourage expecting moms to shoot some where around their 7th month. When they definitely look pregnant but are still feeling good about themselves. Sometimes that 8th and 9th month, you pack on a few more pounds with that growing baby...and are not exactly feeling confident in front of the camera. Clearly this is not the case with Danielle. She is full term and looks absolutely adorable. :)

By the way, there is something in the water! I know so many people pregnant right now and am getting maternity inquires left and right. What a joy to play a part in all of these couples life. Thank you!

Over the last four years, I have really grown to love shooting weddings. But I love the holidays and the annual tradition for families to capture their growing little ones. I must admit...I still get a little nervous shooting young ones. I know I have one of my own...with plenty of practice capturing her. But it still makes me so nervous showing up to a family session and I always take a deep breath and say a little prayer. I had a former client tell me that taking family photos (previously) was like shoving needles into his nail beds. OUCH!!! And that does sound pretty torturous. I never forgot that and always try to make it an enjoyable experience for everyone involved.

Enter the Pham fam! These three little cuties could not have been cooperative, well behaved, and fun to capture! It was super fun to spend some time with them on beautiful SoCal day...that was well into the 80s.

{Danielle} Long Beach Maternity Photographer

I had high hopes of images at sunset for this session. Images of Danielle's belly silhouetted with the setting sun. Instead we got gray skys and tears from the heavens. Tears that signify that winter is upon us and the golden sun is gone. (Insert cry here.) It's a major disappointment that we do in fact have to progress into winter, even here in SoCal. I know, I'm such a whiner and so fortunate with our weather here. Yes, I live here for a reason. But even in SoCal we have winter (albeit our version).

I'm always excited to shoot a baby bump. Especially when it's someone I know and have worked with. I shot Danielle's mom wedding only a short two years ago. And now Michelle is going to be a grandma! I love the sound of that. Congrats to you both and I can't wait to meet baby boy Jace. :)

{Studio 404 Weddings} New Window | Destination I Do

I've been so excited for my brother Steven to style our next window at Studio 404 Weddings. He's already worked his magic in my home and of course for Brookie's birthday, but I've been super excited for him to do something awesome with our storefront. Prior to Ashton Woods Retreat, he worked retail for many years and staged and designed window fronts for Eddie Bauer in downtown Seattle.

We are currently working on developing his brand and creating his website, but in the meantime, he is available for hire! (Plus we need photos for his website). So if you're in SoCal and interested in re-staging your home, planning a party or event, or looking for someone to style your photo shoot...he is the man! He has the vision! I know I'm biased but he's already worked for a couple of friends of mine in their homes...and they have loved what he has done.

Before moving to California he was the owner & inn keeper for a B&B on Bainbridge Island, WA. His reviews are amazing! (Please ignore that first review since my brother was in the hospital when it happened...sheesh!) He just always adds that special touch that makes the difference and always leaves an impression. One reviewer on Trip Advisor said...."His attention to detail is legendary. Look...64 reviews and ALL five stars?".

Well, he did not disappoint when it came to our window, Destination I Do. It's always super difficult to get a decent image of our window because of the direct sunlight and reflections in the window. I did my best...

{Brooklyn} Halloween 2011 | Boo at the Zoo & Pumpkin Patch

I must say that October is a pretty fantastic month. It starts with Brookie's birthday and then continues with the Halloween festivities. It's the start of the holiday season and I'm really learning to love it. It's just a little confusing here in SoCal because it's definitely not holiday weather. There were a few days this month that hit the 90s. I'm kinda ready for fall weather at this point.

Last weekend we met up with Brookie's cousins and went to Boo at the Zoo at the Santa Ana Zoo. It was pretty fantastic! This little girl loves to socialize and an evening out with friends is always a guaranteed good time. It's super cute....all the kids dress in costume and Trick or Treat between zoo exhibits.

I'm sure I've mentioned in the past how I always stress over finding a costume (remember THIS post?). Brookie's costume came to me. She always mimics pirates, saying things like "YoHo, the pirates life for me" and "Arrrr". When I spotted this costume at Old Navy, I snagged it. It was perfect! She loved it too, at first sight! Then she got to looking through a costume catalog at DayCare and decided that she wanted to be a hotdog and that I should be mustard and her daddy should be ketchup. Seriously? The girl does not eat one of those three things! She told everyone she knew that's what we were going to be and did not forget it. It was kinda hilarious! But the pirate costume was purchased and I was not exactly thrilled about her being a hotdog. I know...I'm such a buzz kill. But how cute is she as a pirate...?

Brookie was so excited to go on the boat ride (she had already rode it once before with her friend Samira). This time she was solo and was not having it! The operator stopped the ride and returned our ticket. She always surprises me. Sometimes she is so fearless and other times she is such a shy and fearful little girl. At any rate, I love that she tries. This next image is so sweet of her ready to give her ride ticket.

Next up was the bumper boats with her buddy JonJon.

{Venus + Davey} Red Horse Barn | Huntington Beach Wedding Photographer

Saturday I shot my last wedding for 2011. It was the perfect fall wedding...complete with great weather, fun details, an amazing couple, and family and friends to celebrate with. I know I probably sound like a broken record because I always say how awesome my clients are...but they are!

Venus & Davey are especially awesome. They have been together for quite some time (10 years?) and have a long history of unimaginable loss in their lives. There were so many emotional moments throughout the day by them, their wedding party, and their guests. There were lives remembered, honored, & celebrated on their wedding day. Their special day together was a tribute to their loved ones past & present. It was beautiful. And I could feel the love that surrounds them. And I say that with the utmost honesty.

I loved everything about your wedding day, Venus & Davey. I'm so grateful to have been a part. Thank you. Now go make some babies...so we can work together again soon!

All of the wedding details were amazing.

Venus is a school teacher, so I loved the chalk boards & apples. She did not leave one detail undone.

And from what I hear, Davey cut all the wood bases.

{Brooklyn} Celebrating her 3rd Birthday at California Adventure

Before planning Brookie's UP birthday party, we had planned to go to Disneyland. Some of the "big kids" visiting would have been super disappointed had we canceled those plans. My mom & sister Lynnette were visiting from Washington and my other sister Jeanene was visiting from Texas. We were only missing my dad from my immediate family (who does not fly and only visits in March when he drives down) and my baby brother who couldn't get away from work. We are only together a couple of times a year...so it's super fun to do something like go to Disney together (we are in fact from the woods of Washington, remember?).

So on Brooklyn's actual birthday we all set out for California Adventure (after taking a vote of which park to visit). Since we have an annual pass we only ever go for a couple of hours at a time (the best way to do it!), so there is still much that we have yet to see. It was a fun filled day celebrating the little (or big?) three year old.

This was the first time Brookie met Mickey, and on her birthday!

The real magic begins at sundown!

We finished a wonderful day watching Color of Wonder.
Such a magical show and Brookie absolutely loves it! It's a long show though for kids (30 minutes) but it's pretty spectacular. You're better off getting preferred standing by getting a fast pass or eating at one of the restaurants that include it in the meal.

{Brooklyn} 3rd Birthday | UP Inspired Party

I promised myself that I was not going to host a big birthday party this year...to save myself the effort & money...and instead spend the day at Disneyland with the family (which Brooklyn would enjoy just as much). But then I got this great idea and couldn't get it out of my head. Which was reconfirmed once my amazing friend passed on her daughter's Pottery Barn dollhouse to Brookie for her birthday. And then confirmed again when my brother and I started brainstorming ideas. We went a little crazy but had such a blast planning this party. Steven made all my ideas come to life and there is no way I could have pulled this party off on my own. Thanks bro!

UP is in fact one of Brooklyn's favorite movies. She has lines from the movie memorized and even knows what a "cumulus nimbus" is thanks to it. I love "Ellie's" character in the movie and reminds me so much of Brookie's adventurous little spirit and bossy attitude. So I thought an outdoor movie night sounded like a fun way to celebrate! I got tons of great ideas from Pinterest and the world wide web.

A huge thank you goes out to my entire family visiting for all of the hard work they put into decorating the day of the party. I'm sad they may never come again after the work they did this weekend in preparation for the party and after. A special thanks to Jill for Brookie's birthday attire and for the yummy pasta salad (that everyone is still talking about :)).

Much of this party was stuff I already had in my home or classroom. Or it was made from scratch, only buying the materials to make.

All of the vintage suitcases belong to my older brother (who is currently living with us).

All of the maps & atlas papers came from my classroom (being a Spanish teacher & lover of maps).

I saw this awesome tutorial on a paper airplane mobile and knew we had to make one. The branches literally came from my front yard.

I used all the leftover luminarias from our wedding for the birthday favors. The favors included a flashlight, a postcard, passport, & candy. And the popcorn bags were left over from last years birthday party.

I bought the "UP" letters from the dollar store and used spray adhesive to attach a map from Spain (that I already had). I cut around the edges of the letter after spraying with an exacto knife. I've been wanting letters like this for forever and it literally cost me $2. I've seen them posted here and here for a minimum of $12 per letter.

One of my fave scenes in UP is one of the early scenes as young Ellie & Carl are looking at her Adventure Book with a flashlight in a tent. I knew I wanted to have a tent...and my brother made Brookie one with a quilt that I already had (thanks to this shoot). It's so cute! I'm sure I'll be using it again for a photo shoot.

It was a total buzz kill when the movie kept freezing in the same place. So sad!

{Brooklyn} Our little girl turned 3

This past weekend was Brooklyn's 3rd Birthday (we were so busy entertaining family visiting that I didn't get to blog her birthday until today). We hosted a fun "Up" movie-inspired birthday party and went to California Adventure for her special day. I can't wait to share all of the fun photos we captured and share her adventures.

{Steven} Welcome to SoCal, Big Bro

WOW, what a week! As a I mentioned in my last post, we would be welcoming my older brother Steven to our home & SoCal this past week.

He arrived on Sunday with his vintage suitcases and garden gnome in tow. I had suggested that he capture the gnome on the trip (a la Amelie, one of my favorite movies). That didn't quite happen, but he did at least document the arrival to Long Beach (I love these)...

Steven will be living with us as he finds work and a new home. We were happy to open our home to him (especially since he has done the same for me in the past). I knew he would be a welcome help around our home but I really wasn't expecting what I got this week. Seriously, our home has been transformed!

But first, HE was transformed. He arrived after traveling for a week in his SUV. He was a bit rough on the edges when he arrived. Nothing that a quick shower & shave couldn't fix though. Both Brookie & I's jaws dropped opened when he reappeared from the bathroom after a nice hot shower. See for yourself the difference...

After he got himself cleaned up, he went to town on reorganizing & redecorating my house. It's been a week of non-stop projects. I can't wait to share some proper images (not taken with my iPhone). I have fallen in love with our home all over again. :)

Redecorated, cleaned, and reorganized. It's so fun to come home every day to see what new surprises await. My brother has an amazing talent for "ReDo ReUse". He takes every thing you already have and just redistributes everything. His vision is amazing. I would never think to do what he does. He pulls stuff from all of the rooms in your home and finds a new but perfect fit for them. It's truly amazing! And I love our new home.

I can't wait to share what he did to my office especially. Lots of pretty photos coming soon....so please check back.

{TGIF} Week in Review

It's officially the end of the first full week back to teaching. Phew! I can't tell you how many naps I had this week! It's just such a huge adjustment to get up early once again. I'm so spoiled in the summer as I sleep til 9 or 10am most days...and Brookie sleeps that long too! I have never been a morning person and I'm pretty sure it's safe to say at this point that I never will be. I have grand visions of me waking up at 5am and going to get a run in...but that will never happen. My ideas are so much better than reality. Reality sucks.

I do like the schedule of the school year. I find that I get more done when I have more to do. Crazy, right? I'm the eternal procrastinator. I wish I wasn't, but I am. I've been that way since I was a wee student myself. But the message is that I get it done....but life would probably be a lot less stressful if I just did it before it was crunch time.

One of my favorite bloggers always does a Friday photo dump, where she shares all the photo captures from the week from her cell phone. I love that idea and I just have to borrow it. I don't carry my big camera around with me (as much as I should), so I'm constantly snapping moments with my iPhone. I thought it might be a fun Friday post to summarize the happenings of the week and share those captures. I always find that these insignificant moments today add up to be something meaningful one day!

After being gone for two weeks, this was such a welcome scene home....

This is my view every day as I walk to my classroom. A long quiet hallway into the sun, that always brings promises of a new day. I'm typically one of the firsts to arrive to my classroom from my department. It just so happens that this is the same view I had 10 years ago walking to my classroom, not even knowing the devastation that was already occurring back east in NYC. 2001, it was my first year teaching at Lakewood HS and I was in my classroom when I learned of the news from my teacher friend Kal. I can't believe it's been 10 years. And I really can't believe this travesty ever happened either. When I think back on it, it feels so surreal, unreal.

The evening of 9/11 this year, Dan & I were watching the CBS documentary, 9/11 10 Years Later. I watched that program with so much angst and heartache for what the fireman and people of New York endured. It's just so unimaginable and breaks my heart for all the people that suffered so much loss and trauma. We were in the dark watching the special (which was strangely reminiscent of the post 9/11 days of watching the news as soon as coming home from work, then hours passing, and realizing it's now dark...and there is not a light on in the entire house). All of sudden, Brookie started choking and gagging. It was dark and I had no idea what had just happened. She started throwing up as I caught it with my hands. It was still dark. She then spit out a play plastic food....a tomato. I had no idea she had it in her mouth. She started to cry as I realized what I had just happened, trying not to totally freak out. OMG, she has never been one to put anything in her mouth...even at a young age. I never suspected for a moment that she had something in her mouth. My heart and mind started racing imagining what COULD of just happened. Double that with the fact that I was watching a 9/11 special....I was an emotional wreck. This life...yours, mine, and hers....are so precious!

Considering I'm not a early riser, morning time is just nuts. So you just might understand how annoying this next scene might be to me (especially since I'm not a fan of princess sorts)...

The frickin' princesses have taken over my bathroom countertop. I found much pleasure in swiping them off with my arm in one clean sweep. Sorry Brookie. P. S. If I didn't do it, the shark was going to eat them anyways...so in a way, I saved their lives.

I have been busy cleaning out our spare bedroom. You can see our little monkey jumping on the spare bed, loving this new fresh space. But this space will soon be occupied by my older brother. He will be out newest roommate. Brookie is pretty excited to have her uncle live with us. And I am too.

So this week is a wrap! I look forward to sharing this next week with you. Who knows what's in store?

This is my final blog post of family sessions that I shot while in Sugar Land....and it's of my sister and her family. I had already posted both Maddy & Morgan's individual sessions (here and here too) but now is the whole family. We were lucky enough to shoot on their neighbors property that had an awesome red barn. I loved that both Jeanene and Morgan were sporting their cowboy boots. It felt like a true Texan family shoot!

{Texas} End of Summer Vacation 2011

Brookie & I spent the last week of our summer vacation visiting my sister and her family in the Lone Star State (thus all the family portrait posts this last week). I often talk about how much I love living here in SoCal...but if there were ever something to take me away from here, it would be my family. I enjoy our annual trips to visit one another but the months are long in between. Especially since our children are growing and changing so much between visits. I'm so thankful for Facebook and Skype to keep us connected during those long months apart. But I'm especially thankful for this time together.

Here are a few informal snapshots from our week together.

I have to thank my nieces for getting Brookie hooked on her daily Starbucks (don't worry, it's not coffee....just a fruit smoothie).

Cousins!

Everybody talks about how miserable the heat is in Texas. Give me a pool and I can tolerate the high temperatures, no problem. While Brookie was napping inside, I even snuck in some ZZZZs lounging in the pool. I can't even remember the last time I was able to sleep laying out. It was a little piece of heaven for me and officially completed my summer. During our stay there, B began jumping into the water and going totally under without anyone catching her. That was a first for her and I couldn't believe how brave she is becoming.

Maddy assisted me on a couple of shoots. Here she is sporting my Shootsac lens bag...

If we're friends on Facebook, you might remember me complaining about their dog shredding $80 (that I mistakenly left sitting out on my computer). Here it is taped back together....

The girls even made some Lemon Bars and let Brookie assist.

Oh ya, did I mention that my sister potty trained Brookie too? Yeah, that pretty much rocked! Thanks sis! Brookie and I tend to have some control issues...so what a relief to have my sister take me out of the equation. She's doing great now that we're back at home (but still battling with the #2 issue...advice anyone?).

I love that she scribbled out 'Maddy's Savings' on the jar to reuse for 'Brookie's Potty Jar'.

Who knew a couple of M&M's could be so powerful. I wish life was that simple.

The Van Nuis Family are neighbors of my sister in Sugar Land. I've known them for as long as my sister has lived there (which is now seven years). I've enjoyed their cooking, parties in their pool, and yummy Mexican meals out to eat. It's just crazy to me how grown up their girls are...both now in high school. I had so much fun during our session together....the girls had me thoroughly entertained.

Crazy...but I have yet another Sugar Land family to share with you (and two more to go after this one). Cynthia is another one of my sister Jeanene's good friends that I've had the opportunity to get to know over the years. Prior to my trip there, she had recently commented on Facebook wondering when I would be coming to Texas again to do a photo shoot. In fact she was the motivation behind me planning a trip there in the first place. Thank you Cynthia!

Every once in awhile we toy around with the idea of moving to Texas. If we ever did, I know that we would have an awesome group of friends that would welcome us with open arms. Like this family, the Gratzers...

In honor of all you students & teachers heading back to the classroom this week, I have a fun shoot to share with you. As a teacher myself I thought this would also be a fun way to get me back in the spirit of teaching and learning....after an awesome summer with my little one. This shoot was a collaborative effort between my sister Jeanene and I (all inspired by an awesome song she found). My adorable niece was my model, of course...

Since they started school two weeks ago in Sugar Land, these are actual class notes that she took. #4 totally made me laugh! I guess I have forgotten what's it like in middle school that it needs to be an actual rule.

Miss Rebecca (as she is addressed with respect here in Texas) is my sisters best friend. I had the privilege of shooting her family years ago...but they have since grown! They welcomed Stella Grace into their family four months ago...and now they are a happy foursome.

Bec is the kinda gal that you can sit down and talk with...and be totally real! She's the kinda gal after spending a day with you wish you lived closer to so you could be best friends too. I'm so happy she is my sister's friend. I love her and only know her from my short visits here in Texas. I was so happy that she wanted to have her family captured again during my visit.

Morgan is a girl after my own heart! From the time she was little, people often questioned if she was my daughter because we looked so much alike. But more than resemblance, we share many interests. She loves school and loves to read. She has taken up photography and hopes to study in France one day. She has a love for fashion and has big dreams for her future.

I'm kinda in disbelief how grown she is...how beautiful she is...how mature she is. It just does not seem possible that this little girl that was once mistaken for my mine is now an 8th grader...soon to be going on to high school.

I'm not sure what the difference is, but it feels like she aged 5 years with this straight hair....
